From the standsto the heart of the game.
The 2026 Community Umpire Camp combined demonstrations, scenario learning and hands-on games to help participants rediscover baseball through an umpire’s eyes.
The Taiwan Baseball and Softball Umpires Association held the 2026 Community Umpire Camp at Pingzhen Baseball Stadium, inviting baseball fans and curious newcomers to step onto the field and see how a game works from a different point of view.
Founder Hsu Feng-Pin joined the event as a guest. He believes umpiring is not a distant role, but a professional path that anyone can begin through training, learning and accumulated experience.

Umpiring beginswith understanding
Start from zero. Step into the heart of the game.
The camp set out to show that umpiring is not out of reach. It is a professional role that can be learned, understood and practiced.
No prior umpiring or baseball experience was required. Anyone aged 18 or older with curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn was welcome to take a first step onto the field.

Each decision scenario was built around three approachable layers of learning:
Live demonstration
Instructors showed positioning, movement and the umpire’s field of view.
Scenario explanation
Participants learned why an umpire stands in a particular place and what to watch for.
Game-based practice
Simulations and interactive games made split-second decision-making tangible.

Behind home plateis the real front row
This was more than another opportunity to cheer from the sidelines. It gave parents, fans and younger generations a way to enter the game and take part in its growth.
For fans, it turned talking about calls into making one. For parents, understanding the rules created a shared baseball language with their children.
The moment you make the call, you are no longer only watching—you have become part of the game.
