Baserunning is not speed. It is judgment and understanding.
At Tainan’s 2026 baseball coach development workshop, Hsu Feng-Pin connected baserunning technique with tactical thinking through classroom learning and field practice.

Organized by the Tainan City Sports Bureau and hosted by Yongxin Elementary School, the three-day workshop brought together coaches and educators to strengthen grassroots baseball through professional learning and diverse training topics.
BRPA chairman Hsu Feng-Pin led the January 13 session on baserunning technique and tactical strategy, sharing how baserunning shapes the rhythm and decisions of modern baseball.
Baserunning is the ability to read the game—to integrate rules, tactics and the situation, then make the decision that best serves the team.— Hsu Feng-Pin
01 / READ THE GAME
Beyond speedJudgment and understanding
Baserunning is often reduced to how fast a player is. In reality, split-second judgment, positioning and situational understanding often decide the outcome.
Drawing on grassroots coaching experience, Hsu showed how baserunning belongs in everyday teaching—not as a last-minute addition before competition—and how it connects to offensive rhythm and defensive positioning.
02 / THEORY INTO PRACTICE
From demonstrationto field practice
The practical session turned theory into movement. Through scenarios and step-by-step demonstrations, participants examined positioning, sight lines and the reasoning behind different baserunning decisions.
The goal was not only to know what to do, but to understand why—making expertise something that can be understood, practiced and applied.

03 / BASEBALL EDUCATION
Baseball developmentthrough rules, education and care
The wider program included rules and case studies, gender equity, injury prevention, defense and physical development—reflecting a broad commitment to professional, educational and human-centered baseball.
Baserunning development is more than technical improvement. It teaches players to understand the game, respect its rules and strengthen judgment—values at the heart of BRPA’s work.
04 / KEEP LEARNING
Professional growthbegins with understanding
For coaches, players and advocates alike, expertise begins with the willingness to understand and learn. Every run and every choice can become part of a process worth examining.
Let every run become practice in reading the game, respecting the rules and making a choice.
